Considering that I am a big Scooby-Doo fanatic, and that Krypto is my other favorite cartoon pooch, I had to read this fun mash-up that any reader can enjoy! Starting off with a short comparison of the two dogs reminded me that Krypto wasn’t just weakened by Kryptonite, but also by magic as well. It was a nice intro if someone doesn’t know much about one or the other.
Despite the mystery, which consisted of three chapters, moving rather quickly for me, I highly enjoyed the phonetic spellings of Scooby’s “ruh-rohs,” and couldn’t help myself from saying them aloud as I read over them. It was like I could hear Don Messick’s voice speaking in my head! As Krypto flies over the dog park and hears their cries for help, he finds Scooby and learns about the ghost dog frightening them all away. When more items begin coming to life, Scooby discovers a few clues that help Krypto figure out the ghost’s real identity.
As someone who is used to the original 1960s and early 2000s way of depicting Scooby, I will say that the illustrator took a different approach to his drawings. That being said, he captured the dogs’ expressions and they are close enough to the point where it didn’t hinder the story for me. At the back of the book, there is an explanation as to what makes a mystery, discussion questions, and interactive suggestions aimed for the targeted audience. I can’t wait to read the other ones as no Scooby-Doo book is too young for this true fan!
